Scrap Metal

Scrap Metal Collection in Bury

Metal is one of the few materials that recycles indefinitely without losing quality, so it is worth separating rather than burying in a general load. We collect both household quantities and workshop volumes.

About this service

Scrap Metal in Bury and Greater Manchester

Metal is the outlier in waste. Almost everything else degrades each time it is reprocessed, but steel, aluminium, copper and brass can be melted and recast indefinitely without losing their properties. Recycling aluminium also takes a small fraction of the energy needed to smelt it from bauxite in the first place. This is why metal is worth separating rather than burying in a mixed load, and why it is one of the few waste streams with a positive value attached.

Metals split into two families. Ferrous metals contain iron, which means steel and cast iron, and a magnet sticks to them. Non-ferrous metals do not, and that group includes copper, aluminium, brass and lead. Non-ferrous metals are generally worth considerably more, with copper the most valuable of the common ones, so separating a bundle of copper pipe from a pile of steel before anyone arrives is time well spent.

Household quantities are routine: an old radiator, a replaced boiler, a bed frame, a set of gates, the offcuts from a plumbing job. Workshop and trade volumes are equally straightforward. The one thing we will always ask about is provenance.

Scrap metal is a regulated trade for a reason. Dealers must be licensed, cash payment for scrap is prohibited in England, and sellers have to be identifiable. Any operator who offers to take metal for cash with no questions asked is not working within the rules, and dealing with them is a risk to you as well as to them.

How the collection runs

  1. 1

    Tell us what needs clearing

Call or send the form with a rough idea of what you have. A photo on your phone is usually quicker than describing it.

  2. 2

    We quote for the job

A price based on the volume, the weight and the access, given before any work starts, with no obligation to go ahead.

  3. 3

    We load and clear

Our team does the lifting and carrying, including from upstairs or round the back, then tidies the area afterwards.

  4. 4

    It is sorted and recycled

The load is separated so that metal, wood, cardboard and green waste go for recycling rather than straight to landfill.
