About this service

Bulky Waste in Bury and Greater Manchester

Bulky waste is defined by the problem rather than the material: it is anything too large for a wheelie bin and too awkward for a car boot. A three-seater sofa, a double divan, a chest freezer. Councils do run bulky collections, but they typically book weeks ahead, cap the number of items, and require everything to be at the kerbside before they arrive, which is the hard part if the sofa is on the first floor.

We collect from wherever the item currently is. That includes carrying it down a staircase, through a narrow hallway or out of a back garden, and dismantling it first where that is the only way it will fit through a door. Bed frames and flat-pack wardrobes in particular often have to come apart, which is routine.

Upholstered items are worth flagging separately. Sofas, armchairs and anything else containing foam are treated as a distinct waste stream because of the fire-retardant chemicals in the padding, and they cannot simply be mixed in with general waste at the transfer station. It does not make them difficult to collect, but it does mean they are handled differently once they arrive.

Fridges and freezers are similar. The refrigerant and the insulating foam both have to be removed under controlled conditions before the metal can be recycled, so these go to a facility set up for it rather than into a general load.

What we take

  • Asbestos-backed storage heaters

How the collection runs

  1. 1

    Tell us what needs clearing

Call or send the form with a rough idea of what you have. A photo on your phone is usually quicker than describing it.

  2. 2

    We quote for the job

A price based on the volume, the weight and the access, given before any work starts, with no obligation to go ahead.

  3. 3

    We load and clear

Our team does the lifting and carrying, including from upstairs or round the back, then tidies the area afterwards.

  4. 4

    It is sorted and recycled

The load is separated so that metal, wood, cardboard and green waste go for recycling rather than straight to landfill.
